He won office for the Socialist Party in the 1976 local elections and served from January 1977 to August 1978. National lists place him within the 1976–1979 electoral cycle, a broader range than his documented service. Following his death in June 2021, the municipality declared two days of mourning, and both the executive and Municipal Assembly observed a minute’s silence. The municipal tribute remembered his dedication to Entroncamento. ## Dates and the historical record The council’s tribute of 21 June 2021 explicitly records service from January 1977 to August 1978 under the full name António Augusto Pereira Cardoso. The CNE’s 1976 election documentation provides the electoral context. The distinction matters: winning an election in 1976 and serving in 1977–1978 are compatible, whereas an electoral-cycle label alone should not extend his personal tenure to 1979. ## Legacy and public memory The executive observed a minute’s silence in his memory. This official act is a strong source for his service dates and municipal recognition, but is not a full account of his administration. The available evidence does not justify assigning particular buildings, budgets or policies to him without the corresponding council minutes. Namesake portraits from the constitutional monarchy refer to a different person. ## What the documents establish The Lisbon newspaper A Capital listed António Pereira Cardoso among the elected Socialist mayors on 13 December 1976. ANMP’s historical list groups him under the 1976–1979 electoral period. The council’s later tribute supplies the more precise personal tenure, January 1977–August 1978. These records answer different questions: the election result, the electoral cycle and the actual period served. ## Chronology 1976First democratic local elections after the revolution: the electoral context of his presidency.[1] 1977-01 – 1978-08Personal period in office recorded explicitly by the council’s 2021 tribute.[5] 2021-06-21The council pays tribute and observes a minute of silence.[5] ## Research notes This is a sourced research dossier. Contemporary records, later historical accounts and personal recollections are distinguished where they differ. An announced project is not treated as a completed achievement.
