Read biography

A Lisbon-born photojournalist whose work recorded Portugal’s political and everyday life. His photographs of the January 1914 railway strike preserve rare views of Entroncamento’s station, workers and military presence. Seven of these historical images appear in this guide’s Archive. His connection here is as a visiting photographer, rather than a native of the city.

Life and work

The January 1914 series records distinct aspects of the railway strike: an empty station, telegraph repairs, a military train, a damaged locomotive turntable and engineering troops. Read together, the images preserve the relationship between transport infrastructure and the military response. They are photographs made by Benoliel, not portraits of him. The gallery distinguishes this body of work from his portrait and retains the publication and image-source records. The surviving scans vary in resolution; the downloads preserve the site's existing files without inventing extra detail or altering the historical scene.

Origins and early career

Benoliel’s press career predates the Entroncamento strike. The Gulbenkian exhibition history dates an early report to 1899 and regular work for O Século and Ilustração Portuguesa to 1906. The Hemeroteca’s author index records contributions to several periodicals, allowing his work to be traced across publications rather than through isolated images. His subjects included public ceremonies, workers and everyday urban life.

Legacy and later history

His photographs survive in several institutions. The Military Historical Archive describes a Benoliel collection covering 1903–1921; the Hemeroteca documents the posthumous Arquivo Gráfico da Vida Portuguesa. Catalogued date ranges describe collections and do not by themselves date every photograph. In 1998, an exhibition in Paris brought together 59 photographs lent by Lisbon’s municipal photographic archive. These later preservation and exhibition histories are part of his legacy, distinct from events during his lifetime.
