Read biography
A filmmaker who brought his hometown to the screen. His first feature, Verão Danado (2017), received a special mention at Locarno. Entroncamento (2025), filmed in his home city, premiered in the ACID programme at Cannes. His work connects contemporary Portuguese cinema with the places and lives around him.
Life and work
Cabeleira entered the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in 2010 and completed his directing studies in 2013. His graduation short, Estranhamento, was written by Diogo Figueira and produced by Vasco Esteves; it was selected for Fantasporto 2014. He reunited with them for Nós Somos Gomes Pipa. With Joana Peralta and Marta Ribeiro, he founded the Lisbon production company VIDEOLOTION. These collaborations preceded his first feature, Verão Danado. ACID also preserves a conversation with director Nicolas Peduzzi about Entroncamento and its 2025 Cannes premiere; that interview remains available through the original publisher.
Works and achievements
Verão Danado (2017) established his feature-film career, earning a special mention in Locarno’s Cineasti del presente section. Filomena subsequently appeared in the 2019 IndieLisboa programme. By Flávio (2022) returned to the short form: its story follows Márcia, an aspiring online influencer who takes her son to a date with a rapper. Portugal Film records its selection for the 2022 Berlinale. These are distinct films and festival appearances; the Locarno distinction belongs to Verão Danado, not to his later feature Entroncamento.
Creative approach and local connections
In his Berlinale interview, Cabeleira connected By Flávio with a wish to give Ana Vilaça a leading role and to film the digital world in TorreShopping, Torres Novas, a place familiar from his youth. The regional connection therefore extends beyond films bearing his hometown’s name. For Entroncamento, the ACID conversation with Nicolas Peduzzi documents the film’s presentation at Cannes in 2025. Both interviews offer the director’s own account of his choices; they are linked as first-person sources rather than treated as independent critical verdicts.
