Life and public service

Afonso Serrão Lopes was elected mayor of Entroncamento for the Socialist Party in 1979; national municipal records list his term as 1979–1982. His clearest documented civic legacy is the garden now named Jardim Afonso Serrão Lopes, widely known as the Jardim da Zona Verde. The municipality credits his administration with commissioning its construction on land donated by Dr. Picciochi Garcia.

His successor, Manuel Fanha Vieira, inaugurated the garden in the 1980s. Its trees, planted areas and small artificial lake made it a lasting public space associated with his name.

Dates and the historical record

The municipal-library list gives 1978–1982, while the academic register gives 1979–1982. This may reflect the distinction between succession and an electoral cycle, but the appointment record has not been established. A notice signed on 30 August 1982 confirms him still acting as president. The discrepancy is retained rather than selecting one starting year without qualification.

Legacy and public memory

The municipal tourism guide places the creation of Jardim Afonso Serrão Lopes in the early 1980s on land donated by Dr. Picciochi Garcia. It describes approximately two hectares of trees, planted areas and an artificial lake. Vitor Oliveira’s photograph dated 23 July 2014 documents the later appearance of the garden, not its original inauguration. This distinction avoids treating a modern photograph as a record of the mayor’s own time.
