Life and public service

Jorge Manuel Alves de Faria is an economist and higher-education teacher who served as mayor of Entroncamento from October 2013 until 31 January 2025. He holds an economics degree from the Technical University of Lisbon, a master's degree in socio-organisational systems of economic activity and a doctorate in business management from the University of Évora. His academic career included teaching at the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém and the University of Évora, and leading Santarém's management school between July 2006 and April 2011.

Alongside his municipal responsibilities, he served on the boards of the National Railway Museum Foundation and Águas do Vale do Tejo. He also chaired the regional waste-management company RSTJ in 2019–2020. Elected for the Socialist Party, he completed two mayoral terms and part of a third before resigning; deputy mayor Ilda Joaquim succeeded him.

Origins and life

The 2025 retrospective interview places his birth on 11 January 1957 in Valada, parish of Seiça, Ourém. He explained that his family moved to Entroncamento through his father’s railway employment. This personal account connects his biography to the city’s wider history of migration for railway work. The interview is also a first-person assessment of his own administration and should be read as such.

The municipality and its public works

The interview record spans several phases of his presidency: railway heritage and the museum in 2015; urban regeneration and the proposed station in 2021; railway-maintenance training with the Polytechnic of Tomar and Gustave Eiffel school in 2022; and education, culture, budgets and security in 2024. The video and audio links preserve his own explanations. Announced plans are distinguished from completed works.

[6][7][8][9]

Dates and the historical record

The January 2025 council minutes document his resignation. Ilda Joaquim succeeded him on 1 February, after his departure on 31 January. The succession ended his personal service before the end of the 2021–2025 electoral mandate. That distinction is important when attributing the projects inaugurated or contracted later in 2025.

[10][3]

What the documents establish

Council minutes provide dated examples behind the broader policy interviews. The meeting of 1 February 2022 records discussions with Medway, the railway competence centre and the Portuguese railway platform about a technological cluster. The July 2020 crematorium opening is documented by photographs and a video report; the operator designed, built and ran the facility under a concession, so it should not be described simply as a wholly municipal construction project.
